Games for a rainy treehouse night

Four browser games
to play while the oak leaves fall

When rain drums on the treehouse roof and the rope bridges are too slick to cross, a game in a browser tab is good company. The four below cost nothing to start and open without an installer: a Stone Age tribe learning its first crafts, an airline you build route by route on a real map, an empire led by famous figures from history, and a quick space arena where you are flying within seconds. Each one runs on its own studio's site, and signing up there is free.

Stonies key art
01 · Stone Age settlement

Stonies

A small band of early humans sets up camp, and you decide who gathers berries, who chips flint and who stares at the sky working out what comes next. Crafting and research push the tribe up a long technology ladder, and the camp spreads out as new skills arrive.

Good for
Builders who like a gentle survival flavour and a slow climb through discoveries.
Typical session
Ten to fifteen minutes, once or twice a day
Where it runs
Plays in a desktop browser, and a phone app hangs alongside
Cost
No acorn to pay at the start; in-game purchases are optional extras.
Your first session
  1. Keep food gathering ahead of everything else; a hungry tribe slows every other job.
  2. Put research on a steady line instead of chasing every new idea at once.
  3. Leave open ground around the fire, because later huts and workshops need room.

Airlines Manager: Tycoon key art
02 · Airline tycoon

Airlines Manager: Tycoon

You start with a hub, a bank loan and a blank map of real airports, then open routes and match each plane to the demand on it. Research projects, cabin layouts and ticket prices all feed into whether a route pays, so every new destination is a small spreadsheet decision.

Good for
Players who enjoy figures, planning and watching a network spread across the globe.
Typical session
A handful of quick visits a day

No acorn to pay at the start; in-game purchases are optional extras.
Your first session
  1. Open a few busy short routes before trying long-haul flights.
  2. Fit the aircraft size to the demand on a route; empty seats are expensive.
  3. Pay attention to the loan schedule so repayments never catch you short.

Heroes of History key art
03 · Empire and heroes

Heroes of History

Your city grows from its first streets through the ages of history while you gather a roster of famous heroes to lead its armies. City planning and research sit on one side, and squad battles on a tactical grid sit on the other, so building and fighting feed each other.

Good for
City builders who want a hero roster and some tactics alongside the town.
Typical session
Several brief visits a day

Your first session
  1. Keep the research line moving so the city does not stall between eras.
  2. Build a small, balanced squad and level it up before collecting more heroes.
  3. Join an active alliance early; shared events go faster with company.

Starblast.io key art
04 · Space shooter arena

Starblast.io

A top-down space shooter that drops you straight into a live match without any sign-in. You mine asteroids for gems, spend them climbing a branching ship tree, and then trade shots with other pilots in team battles or a last-ship-standing survival mode.

Good for
Anyone after quick space action with no setup at all.
Typical session
Only a few minutes per sitting

Your first session
  1. Mine a handful of asteroids before picking a fight; upgrades matter early.
  2. Choose a branch of the ship tree and stick to it for the round.
  3. In team mode, stay near allies rather than chasing a lone target across the map.

What free to play means for these four

Every game here lets you sign up and keep playing for as long as you like without paying. The core building, routing, battling and flying are all part of the free game.

Each studio also runs an in-game shop for boosts, premium currency or cosmetic touches. Plenty of players ignore it entirely; if children share the computer, set spending limits on the account before they sit down.

Your opening thirty minutes

Use the button under a game and its official site opens in a new tab. For three of them you register with an email and a password, and the starblast arena simply loads a match with no account needed.

Follow the opening tutorial on the first visit rather than clicking past it. Each one introduces resources, timers and other players in a set order, and the lessons make the second week much smoother.

Fitting play around the day

The tribe, the airline and the empire all carry on while you are away: crafts finish, planes land and buildings complete. Checking in morning and evening is enough to keep pace.

Keep the short visits for collecting and queueing the next jobs, and save the bigger choices, such as a new era, a long-haul route or a hero swap, for a quieter evening. The space arena fits the gaps in between.

Keeping each account safe

Every login belongs to the studio that runs the game, so only type your password on that studio's own web address. Use a different password for each game and switch on any extra sign-in check on offer.

Real support staff never ask for a password in chat, a forum or an email. A stranger promising free gems for your sign-in details wants the account, not your friendship.

Why these four earned a spot on the shelf

  • Each opens in an ordinary computer browser, so there is no launcher or installer to wait for.
  • Starting is free in every case, and the paid extras are shortcuts and decoration rather than a ticket in.
  • Three of them keep working while the tab is closed, so a short visit still moves your tribe, fleet or empire along.
  • The fourth is the opposite: a drop-in arena where a round is over in minutes and nothing waits for you afterwards.

No. All four start in a regular computer browser, with no launcher and no patch to download first.

Yes. Signing up and playing cost nothing, and the in-game shops hold optional extras rather than anything that locks the game.

No. Each comes from its own independent studio, and the buttons here only take you to that studio's official page.

No. Each studio has its own sign-up, and Starblast.io lets you play without one.

Stonies, Airlines Manager and Heroes of History each have an official mobile app besides the browser version. Starblast.io is built around the browser, so it plays best with a keyboard and mouse.

Stonies, with its slow tribal crafting. Airlines Manager suits planners, Heroes of History suits builders who like a battle, and Starblast.io is the pick for a fast few minutes.

In Stonies, Airlines Manager and Heroes of History, timers keep running and progress builds up. Starblast.io is the exception: each match exists only while you are flying in it.
